One of the most common questions new parents ask before their newborn photography session is:

"What should we bring?"

The good news is that preparing for a newborn session is usually much simpler than most families expect. At Pat Hermann Photography, our goal is to create a relaxed, stress-free experience so you can focus on enjoying these precious first days with your baby.

A little preparation goes a long way, and bringing a few essentials can help ensure your session runs smoothly from start to finish.

Extra Feeding Supplies

Whether your baby is breastfed, bottle-fed, or a combination of both, it's always a good idea to bring extra feeding supplies.

Newborn sessions are often warm and cozy to help babies stay comfortable, which can make them a little sleepier—and sometimes a little hungrier, too.

Consider bringing:

  • Extra bottles or pumped milk
  • Formula if applicable
  • Burp cloths
  • Nursing cover if desired

Even babies who recently ate may want a small feeding during the session, and that's completely normal.

Plenty of Diapers and Wipes

Newborn photographers joke about one thing being guaranteed during a session: diaper changes.

It's always best to pack a few more diapers than you think you'll need. Accidents happen, and having extras nearby helps keep everyone relaxed.

Don't forget:

  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Diaper cream if your baby uses it
  • A changing pad

A Pacifier (Even If Baby Rarely Uses One)

If your baby takes a pacifier, be sure to bring it along.

A pacifier can sometimes help soothe a fussy newborn between poses and may help keep baby calm while transitioning from one setup to another.

If your baby doesn't use a pacifier, that's perfectly fine. Every baby is different.

A Special Keepsake (Optional)

Many parents love incorporating meaningful items into their newborn portraits.

Some ideas include:

  • A handmade blanket
  • A family heirloom
  • A special stuffed animal
  • A meaningful piece of jewelry
  • Sports memorabilia
  • A custom name sign

These personal touches can make your images even more meaningful and unique to your family.

Simple, Coordinated Outfits for Parents and Siblings

If family portraits are part of your newborn session, planning outfits ahead of time can make a big difference.

Neutral colors, soft textures, and simple clothing photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your family's connection.

A few tips:

  • Avoid large logos or distracting patterns.
  • Choose soft, neutral colors when possible.
  • Coordinate rather than match exactly.
  • Keep younger siblings comfortable.

Remember, the goal is timeless photographs that you'll love for years to come.

A Change of Clothes for Baby

Even the sleepiest newborns can have unexpected accidents during a session.

Bringing an extra outfit or two ensures you're prepared if baby needs a quick wardrobe change before heading home.

Most Importantly: Bring Patience

Newborn sessions move at baby's pace.

There may be feeding breaks, cuddles, diaper changes, and plenty of soothing along the way. That's completely expected and built into the experience.

The best sessions happen when parents arrive knowing there is no rush. Your baby's comfort and safety always come first.

What You Don't Need to Bring

Many parents are surprised to learn they don't need to bring much at all.

In many professional newborn studios, a variety of wraps, blankets, props, and posing accessories are already available and ready for your session.

Before your appointment, your photographer will let you know exactly what's provided so you can avoid overpacking.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I schedule my newborn session?

The best time to reserve your newborn session is during pregnancy, ideally during your second or third trimester. This ensures availability around your baby's due date.

What is the best age for newborn photos?

Most newborn portraits are photographed within the first two weeks after birth, when babies are typically sleepiest and easiest to pose.

What if my baby won't sleep?

Don't worry. Experienced newborn photographers work with babies every day and know how to adapt the session. Beautiful images can be created whether your baby is sleeping, awake, or somewhere in between.

Can siblings be included?

Absolutely. Including older brothers and sisters often creates some of the most meaningful images from the session.

How long does a newborn session last?

Most newborn sessions last between two and three hours to allow time for feeding, comforting, diaper changes, and posing.

Relax and Enjoy the Experience

The newborn stage passes incredibly quickly.

One day you'll look back at these photographs and remember just how tiny your baby once was. Preparing for your session doesn't have to be complicated. Bring the essentials, trust the process, and enjoy this special time with your growing family.

If you're expecting and looking for a newborn photographer in Peoria, IL, Pat Hermann Photography would love to help preserve these once-in-a-lifetime memories.

Darling Lila is just a few weeks old, but she already has a big personality. She is so sweet and gentle, and she loves to cuddle. Her tiny features, beautiful skin, and gorgeous hair make her a natural in front of the camera.

Lila's parents brought her in for a newborn session, and she was an absolute dream. She slept the entire time, and she let me do set after set with her. She was so relaxed and content, and it was clear that she felt loved and safe in her parents' arms.

I loved having Lila in the studio. She is such a special little girl, and I am so grateful that I was able to document her first few weeks of life. She is already so loved by her older brother and sister, and I know that she is going to have a wonderful life.

I am so blessed to be able to document these important moments for so many families. God has truly given me a great gift, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to share it with others.

If you are expecting a baby, or if you have a newborn, I would love to chat with you about booking a session. I would be honored to be a part of your family's journey.

See highlights of baby's 6-month milestone baby photoshoot

Frances is another one of my baby planners that I get to see every 3 months! She is always ready to flash that smile and I don’t think I have ever seen her sad or angry. Literally. In every image of hers, she is smiling! I am so lucky to have the happiest and cutest babies ever! I mean, have you seen a prettier baby?! Nope. Don’t think so! :-)

We had so much fun at Frances' 6-month milestone photoshoot. She is such a happy and playful baby, and it was so much fun to capture her personality in these photos. We did a variety of poses and settings, and I love how they all turned out. Frances' parents are so proud of her, and I can see why! She is such a beautiful and special little girl.

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to photograph Frances' 6-month milestone. It was such a fun and special experience, and I can't wait to see her again in another 3 months!

Thank you to Frances' parents for choosing me to photograph their beautiful daughter. I am so honored!
