Everything you need to know before your baby's first portrait session with Peoria, IL newborn photographer Pat Hermann Photography.

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life's most unforgettable moments. Those tiny fingers, sleepy smiles, soft little eyelashes, and delicate features change so quickly during the first few weeks. Professional newborn photography allows you to preserve these memories forever with timeless portraits you'll treasure for generations.

At Pat Hermann Photography, we specialize in creating a relaxed, luxury newborn photography experience for families throughout Peoria, IL and the surrounding communities. Whether you're expecting your first baby or adding another little one to your growing family, this guide will answer the most common questions about newborn photography and help you prepare for an unforgettable portrait session.

Why Newborn Photography Matters

The newborn stage is incredibly brief. Within just a few short weeks, babies begin stretching out, becoming more alert, and losing many of the tiny details that make them look so brand new.

Professional newborn portraits freeze this once-in-a-lifetime chapter while showcasing your baby's natural beauty in a safe, artistic, and timeless way. These images become cherished family heirlooms that grow more meaningful with every passing year.

When Should You Schedule Your Newborn Session?

The best time to photograph a newborn is typically between 5 and 14 days after birth. During this window, babies tend to sleep deeply, curl naturally into cozy poses, and are generally more comfortable being gently positioned.

The best time to reserve your session, however, is during your second trimester or early in your third trimester. Booking early guarantees availability around your due date. Once your baby arrives, we'll finalize the exact session date.

What Happens If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

Don't worry—this happens all the time!

Your session is reserved based on your estimated due date. Once your little one arrives, simply let us know, and we'll adjust your appointment accordingly. Our schedule is designed to accommodate babies who decide to make an early or fashionable late entrance.

What Should My Baby Wear?

One of the best parts of choosing Pat Hermann Photography is that you don't have to worry about shopping for outfits.

Your session includes access to carefully selected wraps, blankets, knit outfits, bonnets, headbands, and timeless newborn accessories. Every piece has been chosen to create soft, classic portraits that never go out of style.

Simple is always best. The focus should remain on your beautiful baby—not distracting clothing or busy patterns.

What Should Parents Wear?

Parents often ask what photographs best with a newborn.

We recommend:

  • Neutral colors
  • Soft creams
  • Whites
  • Beige
  • Light gray
  • Earth tones
  • Simple textures
  • Minimal patterns

Coordinating—not matching—creates the most timeless family portraits.

Can Parents and Siblings Be Included?

Absolutely!

Some of the most meaningful images from your newborn session include mom, dad, brothers, and sisters. These portraits tell your family's story and capture the incredible bond you're already building.

Sibling portraits are always handled patiently, making the experience enjoyable for little ones while keeping everyone's safety and comfort a priority.

Is Newborn Photography Safe?

Safety is our number one priority.

With years of newborn photography experience, Pat Hermann Photography understands proper posing techniques, baby comfort, and safe handling practices throughout every session.

Every pose is done gently and naturally, and your baby's comfort always comes first. If a pose isn't right for your baby, we simply move on.

Nothing is ever forced.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Last?

Because babies set the schedule, newborn sessions generally last 2–3 hours.

This allows plenty of time for:

  • Feeding breaks
  • Diaper changes
  • Soothing
  • Swaddling
  • Parent and sibling portraits
  • Individual newborn portraits

A relaxed pace creates a calm environment and beautiful results.

Should I Feed My Baby Before the Session?

A full, sleepy baby is often happiest during a portrait session.

If possible, feeding your baby immediately before arriving—or once you arrive at the studio—can help your little one settle comfortably into sleep.

Don't worry if your baby needs additional feedings during the session. We build plenty of time into every appointment.

At just two weeks old, Baby Banks was the definition of perfection—sleepy, snuggly, and already showing off a little personality in front of the camera.

There is something incredibly special about those first few weeks of life. Everything is so tiny, so new, and changing by the day. Baby Banks' newborn session was a beautiful reminder of why I love photographing these fleeting moments before they disappear.

At just two weeks old, Banks was an absolute dream to work with. From the moment we began, he settled in beautifully and gave us the kind of sleepy newborn session every photographer hopes for. He snoozed peacefully through most of the session, allowing us to create a wonderful variety of setups, wraps, and poses while he stayed completely content.

And can we talk about those cheeks?

Banks had the fullest, squishiest little cheeks that were practically made for newborn portraits. Paired with his adorable little lips, he was almost too cute to be real. Every angle seemed to highlight another perfect little feature that his family will love looking back on for years to come.

Of course, even the sleepiest newborns like to make sure they know what's going on. Banks took a short break from dreaming to open his eyes and check me out for a few minutes. The eye contact he gave me was incredible. Those quiet moments of curiosity added even more variety to his gallery and captured a little glimpse of his emerging personality before he drifted peacefully back to sleep.

One of the biggest benefits of photographing newborns during the first couple of weeks is how naturally they curl up into those cozy poses while still spending much of their day sleeping. That gave us the opportunity to create several different looks throughout the session without disturbing his peaceful little naps.

Every newborn session tells a different story, and Banks' story was one of calm, comfort, and sweetness. Whether he was wrapped up snugly, posed on soft blankets, or simply showing off those adorable cheeks, every image captured just how precious this season of life truly is.

Sessions like this are always a reminder of how quickly babies grow. Before long, those tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, and curled-up poses become memories. Preserving them through professional newborn photography allows families to hold onto these moments long after their little one has outgrown them.

Thank you to Banks' family for trusting Pat Hermann Photography to document such an exciting time. It was truly a pleasure meeting your handsome little guy, and I hope these photographs always bring you back to these unforgettable first days together.

If you're looking for newborn photography in Peoria, IL, Pat Hermann Photography specializes in creating relaxed, timeless newborn portraits that celebrate your baby's earliest days. The first few weeks pass by faster than you can imagine, making this one of the most meaningful investments you'll ever make.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a session, take this as your sign—beautiful moments like these are waiting to be captured.
