Don’t Miss the Magic: Why You Need to Book Your Newborn Session Early

You’ve got the crib assembled, the hospital bag packed, and a name picked out (mostly). But there is one thing on your to-do list that carries a strict expiration date: Your newborn photography session.

In the whirlwind of the third trimester, it’s easy to think, "I’ll just call a photographer once the baby is here."

Here is the truth: If you wait until the baby is born to book, you might already be too late. At Pat Hermann Photography, we believe those first tiny yawns and curled-up toes are masterpieces. But capturing that magic requires more than just a camera—it requires timing. Here is why you need to get on the calendar while you’re still rocking the bump.

1. The "Golden Window" is Fleeting

Newborn photography isn’t just about "cute babies"; it’s about that specific, sleepy, "womb-like" flexibility. This "Golden Window" typically happens between 5 and 14 days after birth. During this time, babies sleep deeply and naturally transition into those adorable, curly poses. After two weeks, babies become more alert and are more prone to baby acne or colic. Booking early ensures you have a spot reserved right in that sweet spot.

2. Professional Photographers Have Limited Capacity

To give every family the attention they deserve, Pat Hermann Photography only accepts a limited number of newborn sessions per month. Because babies rarely arrive on their actual due date, we keep our calendar flexible to accommodate early and late arrivals. Once those monthly slots are gone, they’re gone. Booking in your second or early third trimester guarantees your spot in the queue.

3. Stress-Free Nesting

The last few weeks of pregnancy should be about resting, not frantically Googling "photographers near me" while dealing with swollen ankles. By booking early, you get the paperwork and the planning out of the way. When the baby arrives, all you have to do is send a quick text, and we handle the rest.

4. Time for Creative Collaboration

Do you want a specific color palette to match your nursery? Are there family heirlooms you want to include? Booking early gives us time to chat, plan the styling, and ensure that your session at Pat Hermann Photography is a custom experience tailored specifically to your family’s vibe.

Newborn Photography FAQs

What if my baby arrives early or late?

This is the #1 concern for parents! When you book with Pat Hermann Photography, we put your due date on the calendar as a placeholder. Once the baby actually arrives, you simply notify us within 48 hours, and we set the actual session date within that 5–14 day window.

When is the best time to reach out?

Most parents book during their second trimester (around 20 weeks). If you are further along than that, don't panic! Check Pat Hermann Photography immediately to see if there’s a last-minute opening.

Can we include parents and siblings?

Absolutely. These sessions aren't just about the baby; they’re about the new bond of your entire family. Booking early allows us to prep you on what to wear so the whole family looks cohesive and timeless.

What if I missed the 14-day window?

While the "sleepy poses" are best done early, we can still capture beautiful "older newborn" photos! They may involve more wrapped poses and open-eye shots, but the memories are just as precious.

Ready to Freeze Time?

The newborn stage lasts for a heartbeat. Don't let the opportunity to capture it slip away because the calendar filled up. Secure your session today and rest easy knowing your baby’s first days will be preserved forever.

One is Fun! Why a Studio Cake Smash is the Ultimate 1st Birthday Milestone

They say the days are long, but the years are short—and nothing proves that more than your baby’s first birthday. In just twelve months, your little one has gone from a tiny newborn to a curious, babbly toddler with a huge personality. That is a milestone worth celebrating with more than just a quick phone snap!

At Pat Hermann Photography, our studio cake smash sessions are designed to capture the joy, the mess, and the sheer adorable chaos of turning ONE. It’s not just a photoshoot; it’s an experience.

Ready to plan the best birthday ever? Head over to Pathermannphotography.com to see our latest sets, but first, here is everything you need to know about scheduling.

1. Timing is Everything: Book Early!

The biggest mistake parents make? Waiting until the actual birthday to book. If you want to use these photos for birthday invitations or to display at the birthday party, you need to schedule the session for when your baby is 10 to 11 months old. This allows 2-3 weeks for editing and printing so your photos are ready to shine on the big day!

2. The Studio Advantage (We Clean Up!)

Let’s be honest: giving a one-year-old a cake is a recipe for disaster in your living room. When you book a studio session at Pat Hermann Photography, you don't have to worry about frosting on the carpet or icing on the walls. Our studio is perfectly equipped for messes. Plus, we have professional lighting that ensures every crumb and giggle is captured in high definition.

3. Custom Themes and Professional Styling

Whether you want a classic "Boho Chic" look, a "Wild One" jungle theme, or something completely unique, the studio allows us to build a custom world for your baby. We work with you to coordinate colors, props, and backdrops that match your vision. We make sure the set enhances your baby’s cuteness without distracting from it.

4. It’s More Than Just Cake

We don't start with the mess! A typical session at our studio includes:

  • Classic Portraits: Clean, timeless photos of your baby in a cute outfit before the "destruction" begins.
  • The Smash: The main event! We let your baby explore the texture, the taste, and the fun of their first cake.
  • The Splash: Many of our sessions end with a "bubble bath" in a tiny tub. It’s great for cleaning up the baby and results in some of the best, most splash-filled smiles!

Cake Smash & 1st Birthday FAQs

What should I bring to the session?

We provide the set and the props! You just need to bring the baby, an extra change of clothes for yourself (you will get frosting on you!), and your baby’s favorite snacks in case they need a little encouragement to try the cake.

What if my baby doesn't like the cake?

It happens! Some babies are hesitant about new textures. Don't worry—we have plenty of tricks up our sleeves. Sometimes we hide "puffs" or fruit inside the cake to get them interested, and we always focus on capturing their personality, cake or no cake.

When should I reach out to book?

Our weekend dates fill up incredibly fast! We recommend reaching out 2 to 3 months in advance to ensure we can accommodate your preferred date and have time to design your custom theme.

Do you provide the cake?

Due to allergy concerns, we typically ask parents to provide the cake. This ensures you know exactly what is in the ingredients. We are happy to recommend local bakeries that specialize in beautiful, smashable "naked cakes" or custom designs!

Let’s Celebrate Your "Wild One"!

Your baby only turns one once. Let’s make sure the memories are as sweet as the cake. From custom backdrops to the final bubble bath splash, Pat Hermann Photography is here to capture it all.

Everything you need to know before your baby's first portrait session with Peoria, IL newborn photographer Pat Hermann Photography.

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life's most unforgettable moments. Those tiny fingers, sleepy smiles, soft little eyelashes, and delicate features change so quickly during the first few weeks. Professional newborn photography allows you to preserve these memories forever with timeless portraits you'll treasure for generations.

At Pat Hermann Photography, we specialize in creating a relaxed, luxury newborn photography experience for families throughout Peoria, IL and the surrounding communities. Whether you're expecting your first baby or adding another little one to your growing family, this guide will answer the most common questions about newborn photography and help you prepare for an unforgettable portrait session.

Why Newborn Photography Matters

The newborn stage is incredibly brief. Within just a few short weeks, babies begin stretching out, becoming more alert, and losing many of the tiny details that make them look so brand new.

Professional newborn portraits freeze this once-in-a-lifetime chapter while showcasing your baby's natural beauty in a safe, artistic, and timeless way. These images become cherished family heirlooms that grow more meaningful with every passing year.

When Should You Schedule Your Newborn Session?

The best time to photograph a newborn is typically between 5 and 14 days after birth. During this window, babies tend to sleep deeply, curl naturally into cozy poses, and are generally more comfortable being gently positioned.

The best time to reserve your session, however, is during your second trimester or early in your third trimester. Booking early guarantees availability around your due date. Once your baby arrives, we'll finalize the exact session date.

What Happens If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

Don't worry—this happens all the time!

Your session is reserved based on your estimated due date. Once your little one arrives, simply let us know, and we'll adjust your appointment accordingly. Our schedule is designed to accommodate babies who decide to make an early or fashionable late entrance.

What Should My Baby Wear?

One of the best parts of choosing Pat Hermann Photography is that you don't have to worry about shopping for outfits.

Your session includes access to carefully selected wraps, blankets, knit outfits, bonnets, headbands, and timeless newborn accessories. Every piece has been chosen to create soft, classic portraits that never go out of style.

Simple is always best. The focus should remain on your beautiful baby—not distracting clothing or busy patterns.

What Should Parents Wear?

Parents often ask what photographs best with a newborn.

We recommend:

  • Neutral colors
  • Soft creams
  • Whites
  • Beige
  • Light gray
  • Earth tones
  • Simple textures
  • Minimal patterns

Coordinating—not matching—creates the most timeless family portraits.

Can Parents and Siblings Be Included?

Absolutely!

Some of the most meaningful images from your newborn session include mom, dad, brothers, and sisters. These portraits tell your family's story and capture the incredible bond you're already building.

Sibling portraits are always handled patiently, making the experience enjoyable for little ones while keeping everyone's safety and comfort a priority.

Is Newborn Photography Safe?

Safety is our number one priority.

With years of newborn photography experience, Pat Hermann Photography understands proper posing techniques, baby comfort, and safe handling practices throughout every session.

Every pose is done gently and naturally, and your baby's comfort always comes first. If a pose isn't right for your baby, we simply move on.

Nothing is ever forced.

How Long Does a Newborn Session Last?

Because babies set the schedule, newborn sessions generally last 2–3 hours.

This allows plenty of time for:

  • Feeding breaks
  • Diaper changes
  • Soothing
  • Swaddling
  • Parent and sibling portraits
  • Individual newborn portraits

A relaxed pace creates a calm environment and beautiful results.

Should I Feed My Baby Before the Session?

A full, sleepy baby is often happiest during a portrait session.

If possible, feeding your baby immediately before arriving—or once you arrive at the studio—can help your little one settle comfortably into sleep.

Don't worry if your baby needs additional feedings during the session. We build plenty of time into every appointment.

Why Book a First Birthday Cake Smash Session?

Your baby's first birthday only happens once.

A cake smash session captures everything that makes this age so special—from chubby cheeks and tiny toes to belly laughs and messy fingers covered in frosting. These portraits celebrate your child's growing personality while documenting one of the biggest milestones of their first year.

They're also perfect for:

  • First birthday invitations
  • Birthday party decorations
  • Custom albums
  • Wall art
  • Gifts for grandparents
  • Social media announcements

These are memories you'll smile about long after the frosting is gone.

When Should You Schedule a Cake Smash Session?

We recommend scheduling your baby's cake smash session about 3 to 6 weeks before their first birthday.

This gives you plenty of time to receive your images for birthday invitations, party décor, thank-you cards, or a special birthday display.

Booking early also helps ensure availability around your preferred date.

A Custom Session Designed Just for Your Baby

Every cake smash session at Pat Hermann Photography is personalized to reflect your family's style.

Whether you envision something:

  • Simple and timeless
  • Soft and elegant
  • Floral and whimsical
  • Neutral and organic
  • Bright and colorful
  • Seasonal
  • Classic with balloons

We'll work together to create a setup that complements your vision while keeping the focus on your little one.

The result is a session that feels unique, joyful, and completely your own.

What Happens During the Session?

Every cake smash session is designed to tell the story of your baby's first birthday.

Most sessions include:

Clean Portraits

We begin with classic portraits before the cake comes out. These timeless images highlight your baby's sweet personality and are perfect for wall art and family keepsakes.

The Cake Smash

Next comes everyone's favorite part!

Your little one gets to explore, taste, squish, and smash their birthday cake while we capture every giggle, funny face, and frosting-covered smile.

No two babies react the same way—and that's part of the fun!

Splash Time

Many families choose to end the session with a warm bubble bath in a vintage-style tub.

Not only does it help clean off the frosting, but it also creates some of the happiest, most adorable photographs of the day.

What Should My Baby Wear?

Simple outfits photograph beautifully.

Many parents choose:

  • Rompers
  • Suspender sets
  • Soft dresses
  • Bloomers
  • Neutral outfits
  • Classic birthday attire

Avoid large logos, busy patterns, or clothing that distracts from your baby's expressions.

We'll gladly help coordinate outfits with your chosen session theme.

Do I Need to Bring the Cake?

We'll discuss all the details during your planning consultation, including cake style, colors, and coordinating your session design.

A simple cake with soft buttercream frosting often photographs best and allows your baby's expressions to shine.

Can Parents and Siblings Join?

Absolutely!

Before the cake comes out, many families choose to include parent, sibling, or family portraits. These images beautifully document this special season and show just how much your little one has grown during their first year.

From serious little expressions to sweet smiles, Sabrina's 9-month milestone session was full of personality—and a reminder of just how quickly the first year flies by.

There is something so special about watching babies grow throughout their first year, and Sabrina's 9-month milestone session was another wonderful reminder of just how quickly time passes. It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating her earlier milestones, and now she's already sitting confidently, showing off her adorable personality, and getting ready for the final stretch before her first birthday.

As part of our Baby Plan, I've had the privilege of seeing Sabrina and her family several times over the past year. One of the best parts of these sessions is getting to watch each baby's unique personality begin to shine. Every visit is a little different, and every stage brings something new to capture.

For this session, Sabrina decided she was going to keep things serious for a while. She gave me those big, thoughtful eyes and perfectly posed expressions that honestly looked like she'd been practicing for a modeling portfolio. She had the "smolder" mastered from the moment we started!

Of course, I wasn't giving up that easily. After a little patience, a few silly noises, and probably looking just a bit ridiculous behind the camera, she finally rewarded me with a handful of beautiful smiles. Those moments are always worth the effort because they're completely genuine—and they're the expressions parents love to remember.

Nine months is such a fun age to photograph. Babies are usually sitting independently, full of curiosity, and their personalities are becoming more obvious every day. Whether they're all smiles, full of serious concentration, or somewhere in between, every expression tells part of their story.

It was also wonderful seeing Sabrina's family again. One of my favorite parts of the Baby Plan is building relationships with families throughout their baby's first year. Watching these little ones grow while getting to know their parents makes every session feel personal, and it's incredibly rewarding to document these memories as they unfold.

Now, the countdown is officially on for Sabrina's one-year milestone session. It's hard to believe we're already almost there! I know she'll have changed so much by then, and I can't wait to celebrate such a big milestone with her and her family.

Happy 9 months, sweet Sabrina! Thank you for keeping me on my toes, making me work for those smiles, and reminding everyone that serious faces can be just as adorable.

If you're looking for 9-month milestone photography in Peoria, IL, or you're interested in documenting your baby's entire first year, the Baby Plan at Pat Hermann Photography is a wonderful way to preserve every stage before it becomes a memory. The first year truly goes by in the blink of an eye, and these milestones are worth remembering forever.
